Since I was old enough to have acne I have struggled with it. Now I am at the point of obsession with skincare because I want clear, glowing skin. I have researched so much over the years and tried so many products that I feel like an expert (lol). I believe that starting from the basics of skincare is the first step to changing your skin. Here are some basic tips that I believe everyone should know:
1. Learn your skin type This is very important. What works for dry skin will not work for oily skin and vice versa; although, there are many products that work for both oily and dry skin. I have oily skin so I build my routine based on that. I have also learned what ingredients work best for oily skin. For example: I have learned that oil is essential for treating oily/combination skin.
2. Basic skincare routine. A basic skincare routine should consist of a cleanser, toner, serum, moisturizer, and sunscreen. DO NOT skip sunscreen. Sunscreen is super important not only to protect from sunburn, but to even out skin, prevent dark spots, and to slow the process of aging.
3. Wash your face twice a day. Your skin goes through a lot throughout the day, and you do not want to go to sleep with all the pollution and stress on your skin. Your skin repairs itself overnight, so a skincare routine will enhance the process.
4. Stay consistent with your routine. Clear skin does not happen overnight. It takes patience and consistency to really see a difference in your skin.
5. Wash your pillow cases and sheets often. Sleeping on dirty sheets, comforters, and pillow cases will make your face breakout. I actually use a clean t-shirt as my pillow case, and I change it every week. Also try not to touch your face throughout the day.
6. Ladies, do not fall asleep in your makeup. Sleeping in your makeup is one of the worst things you can do to your skin, mainly because your skin repairs itself overnight. I use oils (jojoba, sweet almond, and olive oil) to take off my makeup because it is better for your skin. Also wash your makeup brushes at-least once a week with baby body wash or shampoo. Clean your beauty blenders before each use.
7. Drink water and watch what you eat. Diet may or may not affect your skin. Some people can eat whatever they want and maintain clear skin; however, there are many of us that cannot indulge in junk food because you end up with a breakout. I drink a lot of water and I eat a lot of veggies and fruits. I do not drink soda and I limit my intake of greasy, fried foods. Plus eating healthy is good for your overall health :)
